Early December 2011 – Work has finally started on the £900,000 project to transform Rugby’s 167 year-old grade I listed Leicester Road viaduct into a cycleway and foot path. The Black Path bridge over the main line railway and the viaduct will form part of a traffic-free route linking Newbold as well as the Glebe and Swift Valley Industrial Estates to Rugby town centre. Developers Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, and Rugby Borough Council, are constructing the path in order to connect communities to workplaces, schools, shops and the rail station.
The first phase of the scheme will see a pedestrian and cycle path created on the former greenway between Quarry Close and Consul Road with barriers to be altered to allow access for wheelchairs, buggies and pushchairs.

Part of the funding for the project amounting to £350,000 has come from the Big Lottery Fund with Rugby Borough Council putting up £290,000. The balance has come from other sources
